1. Protect your income and family

If others depend on your income, coverage in your own name is the foundation. See life insurance for newcomers, life insurance on a work permit, and critical illness insurance. If parents or grandparents are visiting, see Super Visa insurance.

2. Open the right savings accounts

For most newcomers the order is the TFSA first, then the RRSP once you have earned income, the FHSA if a first home is a goal, and an RESP for children. See TFSA vs RRSP for newcomers, FHSA for newcomers, and RESP for newcomer families.

3. Plan your debt

List mortgage, vehicle, credit card, and student loans, then sequence repayment so there is a clear order and an end date.

Frequently asked questions

What should newcomers do first financially?

Common first steps are protecting income with insurance where others depend on it, opening the right registered savings accounts, and sequencing debt repayment.

Which savings account should newcomers open first?

For most newcomers the TFSA comes first because it has no income requirement, followed by the RRSP once there is earned income, plus the FHSA for a first home and an RESP for children.

Do newcomers qualify for government savings grants?

Yes. An RESP can receive the Canada Education Savings Grant once the child and subscriber have SINs, and the FHSA and TFSA offer tax advantages from the year of eligibility.

Is the review free?

Yes. There is no charge for the review or the written summary.
