Eligibility and coverage
Work permit holders are typically eligible for term life insurance. Some insurers apply a waiting period of a few months after arrival, and some cap the coverage amount until the applicant has been in Canada longer. Permanent residents are generally assessed the same as Canadian citizens.
Documents required
| Document | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Copy of work permit | The additional item carriers require that citizens and PRs do not provide. |
| Government ID | Identity verification. |
| Health questions | Standard health questionnaire. A medical exam is generally required only for larger amounts. |
If the permit changes or expires
Once an individual policy is in force, most carriers do not monitor immigration status. Coverage generally continues while premiums are paid, including if the permit later expires or status changes while permanent residency is in progress.
Coverage type
Term life covers a set period at a lower premium for a given amount. Whole life is permanent and builds cash value at a higher premium. The amount is based on what the family would need, considering debts, mortgage, education costs and dependents.
