Eligibility by immigration status
| Status | Eligibility |
|---|---|
| Permanent Resident | Generally assessed the same as a Canadian citizen. Term and whole life are available. |
| Work Permit | Typically eligible for term life insurance. Some insurers apply a waiting period of a few months after arrival, or a coverage cap. |
| Study Permit | Options are more limited and depend on the insurer. |
Once an individual policy is in force, most carriers do not re-check immigration status. Coverage generally continues while premiums are paid, even if a permit later changes.
How coverage amounts are calculated
The coverage amount is based on what the family would need, considering mortgage balance, other debts, children's education costs, dependents supported in Canada or abroad, existing savings, and any portable workplace coverage.
The coverage amount depends on the individual situation.
Term vs whole life
Term life covers a set period (for example 10, 20, or 30 years) and pays a benefit if death occurs during the term. Premiums are lower for a given coverage amount.
Whole life is permanent coverage that also builds cash value over time. Premiums are higher for the same death benefit.
Documents required
Work permit holders provide a copy of the permit in addition to the items any applicant submits: government ID and answers to standard health questions. A medical exam is generally required only for larger coverage amounts.
